School zone mobile camera

A MOBILE speed camera was operating near the Bayles Primary School on 10 November following reports of high speed in the area.
The camera was operating on Ballarto Road, Kooweerup, in response to “speed- related complaints”.
It is one of about 2000 pre-approved mobile camera sites across the state.
A Department of Justice spokesperson said it was only operating for the day.
“That is the most recent day we have that camera in operation, however it may be activated again at any time,” she said.
“Site selection, planning and deployment of all mobile camera sites is at the sole direction of Victoria Police.
“The highest priority sites are those with a high crash-risk and speed-related problem areas.
“The safety of all road users is taken into consideration when selecting sites for mobile camera operations.
“Each month, a list of potential sites identified by Victoria Police is posted on the Cameras Save Lives website.”
However, local resident Pam Carteledge said the community had been calling for a permanent speed camera with many motorists failing to slow down near the school.
“People are treating this road like a racetrack,” she said.
“We cannot get the police to attend often enough and it was only a matter of time before there was some sort of accident.
“I only wish we really could get a speed camera there (permanently) because normally it is only a few motorists who actually slow down to 40kmh.”
