Tony Abbott visits Beaconsfield

By Aneeka Simonis

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott made a special visit to Beaconsfield this morning to make several budget announcements.

Cardinia Shire Council was handed $1.5 million in federal funding to support the construction of the Community Hub in Emerald.

Member for La Trobe Jason Wood said the Emerald Hub will be used by many different members of the community.

“The Emerald project will upgrade the existing two-storey Mechanics Hall to provide  space and facilities for University of the Third Age, Men’s Shed, 3MDR Community Radio, art displays and local tourism information – this really is a great boost for the area”.

Mr Abbott, who indulged many by posing for selfies, encouraged unity amongst the many different culture groups in the state’s south-east.

“Many of you were born overseas and, if anything, that adds a special dimension to your commitment to this country,” he said.

“The great thing about this country of ours is it has always been a country that has welcomed newcomers and made them part of this nation.”
