IF YOU’VE ever brought an Anzac Day pin from out the front of Beaconsfield Woolworths, there’s a good chance you bought it from Garry and Jacquie Manning.
The Berwick couple have devoted a significant amount of time during the last 15 years to collecting money for the Berwick RSL.
They spend around 10 days fund-raising in the lead-up to Anzac Day in April and Remembrance Day in November.
Garry, a Vietnam veteran, said the response to this year’s Anzac Day appeal was outstanding.
“We have to thank everyone that contributed to raising such an impressive amount,” he said.
“Everyone’s so friendly and generous. The regular shoppers have come to know us and they always stop for a chat.
“It’s a good way to engage with the community.”
The pair collect donations outside Woolworths in High Street, Beaconsfield from about 9am until 5pm.
They have had a strong involvement with the Berwick RSL for many years, and Jacquie is currently president of the Berwick Ladies’ Auxiliary.
While they did not wish to disclose how much was donated this year, Garry said it was significantly higher than usual.
“We were particularly pleased with this year’s fund-raising result. It reflects a real commitment by the people of this area,” Garry said.
“All the money goes towards helping veterans and their families.”
