A Gem of a Brooker

YARRA VALLEY MOUNTAIN DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE

A VINTAGE performance up forward from the evergreen Shannon Richardson steered Gembrook Cockatoo to victory over Yarra Junction on Saturday in Division 2 of the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League.
The hometown Eagles took a narrow two-point lead into quarter-time, which was trimmed again to just a point at the main break.
But the Brookers exploded out of the gates in the second half, piling on seven goals to just one from Yarra Junction – taking a decisive 34-point lead into the final change.
The Eagles roared back in the last, adding seven goals of their own, but it wasn’t enough as Craig Clarke’s men came away with an 11-point win, 14.14 (98) to 13.9 (87).
Richardson starred with a superb seven-goal haul, while the versatile Ricky Causer led from the front and Riley Wilson (2 goals) and Ricky Delphine continued their strong starts to season 2015. Emerald, meanwhile, had the bye.
The Brookers moved into the top four with their win and will host seventh-placed Yea this Saturday, while the Bombers – two wins clear of their local rivals in second – travel to Seville, which currently sits in sixth spot.
