Trading for perfection

Berwick’s Jimmy Phillips has been outstanding for Berwick this year…but would he look like in a Cranbourne jumper? 140091 Picture: ROB CAREW

TRADING.
At the elite VFL/AFL level, it’s been going on for years, but just how could clubs in the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) benefit if we introduced -hypothetically we might add- the loyalty-killer into our league.
Take the emotion away for a minute, and just imagine what Trade Week 2015 might look like if it took place at the half-way mark, round nine this year.
What would the contenders give up to secure that secret ingredient that could take them all the way, and how could clubs at the lower end use Trade Week as a way of beefing up their stocks?
Who has an abundance of talent in certain areas? Who desperately needs a fill?
And what players might not realise their true value to another club.
Daniel Kitto’s move from Narre Warren to Cranbourne has been the only transfer between clubs that has had any real impact on the senior competition this season.
The centre-half-forward has flourished at Cranbourne, while if he had stayed at Narre his potential may have taken longer to shine!
But that’s a transfer, not a trade, just what would the key decision makers decide to take their clubs forward this season.
The Gazette has taken a hypothetical look at Trade Week 2015 … but please remember, we love the loyalty within the local game and this is only a hypothetical.
Trade 1:
Jake Barclay (Pakenham) for Chris Worner (Beaconsfield).
Pakenham has two small forwards in Barclay and Jake Smith, while Beaconsfield is top-heavy up forward with Beau Dowler joining Taylor Joyce and Worner as marking options. Worner would provide the perfect third avenue to goal for the Lions, while Barclay would bring that forward pressure that the Eagles have been missing this season.
Trade 2:
Frank D’Agostino (Doveton) for Matt Soroczynski (Narre Warren).
Jake Richardson and Jordyn Flannery combined to defeat Doveton ruckman Russell Gabriel on Saturday, but that’s not the ideal set up for Narre coach Chris Toner going forward. Richardson will be required at centre-half-forward, leaving the Magpies a big man short, D’Agostino the perfect fit, while Soroczynski’s explosive run and carry would benefit the Doves.
Trade 3:
Troy Tharle (Cranbourne) for Patrick Chin (Tooradin).
Tooradin needs a mobile second key forward, one who can present around 50 then turn and deliver to Julian Suarez, who has been under the pump this year. Tharle is hard-working, and just what the doctor ordered to fill this role, while the dangerous Chin would relish the opportunity of working at the feet of Marc Holt, Daniel Kitto and Michael Theodoridis.
Trade 4:
Dylan Barfoot and Joshua Rich (Cranbourne) for Billy Thomas (Hampton Park).
Hampton Park lose out in the ruck trade, with Thomas better preformed than the young Barfoot, but gain a good finisher in Rich, who impressed his new club by kicking four goals against them in round six. Cranbourne can now negotiate with Berwick, who need a ruckman. What can they get for either the returning Michael Boland or Thomas?
Trade 5:
James Phillips and Lucas Jellyman-Turner (Berwick) for Michael Boland (Cranbourne).
Cranbourne play it safe, and keep its fit new ruckman in Thomas, and trade Boland to a desperate Berwick, who now potentially has a premiership winning ruckman on its hands. Phillips, who has been superb playing out of position for the Wickers this season, will add versatility to Cranbourne, while Jellyman-Turner can fix the Eagles deficiency of minding small forwards in defence.
Trade 6:
Jesse Linkins (Beaconsfield) for Tommy Marks (ROC).
This one will test the heartstrings because Linkins is a long-time favourite at Beacy and Marks is heading in the same direction at ROC. The Kangaroos need direction and consistency around the contest, and the experienced Linkins could deliver that. The Eagles have so much depth through the midfield that they could surely relinquish one to get some explosive pace out wide.
