A FEW weeks back the Gazette ran this photo of legendary Pakenham trainer Ray ‘Darby’ Webster and said he was with his 1943 Melbourne Cup winner Dark Felt.
Unfortunately, we didn’t get that part right.
Darby is on another horse, Ancient Mariner, on his Dakwood property, which ran off King Street.
Ancient Mariner was a handy type owned by the Bourke family.
Dark Felt did not spend long in the Webster stable – but long enough to make a name for himself as Pakenham’s only winner of Australia’s most famous horse race.
