GARFIELD GOLF

Sunday’s stableford event provided the golfing highlight at Garfield this week with club champion Shane Male putting on an absolute clinic of excellence by shooting a four-under par 65 off the stick.

Male’s round, which included five birdies and one bogey, saw him sign off on a wonderful score of 43 points, off a handicap of three, to win by a whopping six shots from runner-up Craig Hunter.

The weather on Sunday was just like Male’s round of golf – bright and fantastic – with plenty of winter sunshine seeing the car park absolutely full with plenty of social groups and week enders taking up the challenge.

Back to last week and it was the Thursday’s golfers who got the best of the weather this week as a field of 63 turned out for the days regular stableford competition.

A handicap score of 36 points was all that was required to get the win which was achieved by Darren Stanton for the A Grade event and likewise for Peter Johnson in B Grade.

Peter Lazarus broke the shackles for the average scores by cleaning up for the C Grade event with a great winter score of 40 points to defeat the unlucky Russell Kerr who scored a total of 38 points.

A final score of 33 points was good enough to get a ball down the line.

Plenty of overnight rain on Friday affected everyone’s Saturday decision whether to play or not and eventually an average size field of some 77 turned out.

A better than handicap round of 38 points got the job done with Darren Mouser (8) having a nice round winning the A Grade event to defeat Craig Cousin by just one point.

Joe Tonso won the B Grade event with the same score to defeat Peter Johnson by the three points. Daryl Sheehan won the C Grade event with a total of 35 points playing off his mark of 22 to defeat Mark Cousin by just one point.

There was a good birdie count on the par threes with a total of 15 being achieved which included a double to Brett Dwyer.

A less than impressive score of the 32 points was all that was needed to get a ball down the line.

On Monday two golfers tasted success with handicap scores of 36 points getting the job done with Andrew Went and James Grant winning both eligible grades.

DEEP CREEK GOLF CLUB

Big-hitting Brett Nowlan was the only player to play to his handicap at Deep Creek Golf Club on Saturday finishing square with the card in not ideal conditions for golf.

Cold and greasy conditions made scoring difficult for all, but Nowlan held his nerve to finish square, off his handicap of 13, to take out top honours.

Steven Van Roy (35) and Brian ‘Worm’ Webster (16) were the unlucky players on the weekend, finishing on -1 to lose by a solitary shot.

Things fell away from there with Dean Jones (9) and Alex Blanck (20) finishing on -3, and Frankie Chiu (11) and Jimmy Pari (14) on -4.

Bajan Sangah (16) was next best on -5, Jack Scarborough (14), Colin Crowle (10) and Andrew Heagney (17) on -6. Three players finished on -7, Les Jones (23), Timothy Pratt (7) and Harry Elyasie (5), while Michael Banger (27) and Brenton Hollingworth (28) rounded out a tough day for scoring on -8.

Sua won via countback, with Scarborough in second place and Seamer rounding out the placings.
