GARFIELD GOLF

Let’s set the scene; a fantastic warm sunny day with a huge field of 132 all eager to get their name up in lights for the playing of the rescheduled 2021 Club Championships played on a course with rock hard fairways and the greenest of greens.

The overall scoring was very good with a better than par round or equal required to feature in the money.

A total of the four eagles were achieved with Matt Skinner and Stephan Murray on the first, Evan Williams on the second and Shane Male becoming just the second person in over 20 years to eagle the par four seventh along with Gary Kelly.

Geoff Turner won the A Grade event with a net 64 defeating Peter Black by the one shot whilst Craig Metcalf had an incredible nett 61, playing off his mark of 14, to win the B Grade event with a margin of three strokes to Craig Cousins in the runners up stall.

Malcolm Hirt returned to the winners list by winning the C Grade event with a round of nett 67 defeating Robert Murphy by two strokes.

Ian Scott tasted success for the D Graders with a nice round of nett 63, defeating Mick Howsin by one shot. A total of 19 birdies were scored for the day on the par threes, whilst a par round of 69 got you a ball down the line.

Another good size field of 74 did battle on Thursday which produced, for the third week in a row, howling easterly winds. Even so the scoring by the winners was of a high standard.

Lino Giambertone found the conditions to his liking with a very nice 42 points giving him the C Grade win three points clear of Gary Kelly having a good week with a round of 69 scored on Saturday as well.

Arti Koopman got the job done for the B Graders with a winning score of 41 points to defeat Michael Payroli by two points. Richard Perry returned to the A Grade winners list with a fine round of 39 points playing off his mark of 11 to defeat Craig Cousin and Ron Fielding by two points.

A final score of 34 points or better was good enough to get a ball down the line.

The Gippsland Veterans recently travelled up to Mirboo North for a comp of 4BBB Stableford which attracted a field of 102 players of which Garfield was represented by four teams.

The course was in excellent condition with the fairways in the best ever condition that the Garfield boys had ever seen so the ball stayed in the fairways as long as you could hit them.

Local knowledge for reading the greens proved an advantage for scoring.

The best of our motley crew were Trevor Guille and Steve O’Loughlin with a total of 43 points, unlucky not to win their Grade.

Please don’t forget the upcoming Veterans Aggregate Four-Ball Stableford event scheduled for play on 18 February at a cost of just $30 per player which includes a good lunch. All enquiries for this event to John Scale or at the club house for an entry form.

The next Veterans event is on 31 January so names to John Scale no later than the 26th please.

Next Saturday is the second round of the club championships.
