Goon veterans start season in style

Nar Nar Goon has made a big statement in round one of the WGFNC Veterans competition with a resounding 14.8(92) to 5.2(32) victory over Phillip Island on Sunday.

The Goon has attracted a very strong list of former senior players, with 28 over-35’s pulling on the blue and white hoops on the weekend.

Nar Nar Goon led by 13 points at quarter time, and had the game sewn up by half time with a 33-point lead.

The Goon kicked six goals to two after the main break to race away with a 10-goal victory.

Former Bunyip star Michael Whyte led the way for the Goon; kicking four goals, while Lucas Thomas, Troy Farrell and Tristan Whytcross all hit the scoreboard on multiple occasions.

Jared Goldsack, Daniel Healey and Nathan Lieshout also chipped in with a goal apiece in promising first-up performances.

Whyte was named best for the Goon, while Ben Nobelius, Kevin Quinn, Shannon Stocco and former Pakenham star Nathan Brown were all valuable contributors on the day.

Geoff Odgers and Aidan Williams were best for the beaten Bulldogs.

In other games, a fast start has seen Devon Meadows prove too strong for Tooradin-Dalmore, winning 8.8(56) to 3.6(24) at Glover Reserve.

The Panthers were on fire in the opening quarter, kicking 4.4 to lead by 21 points at the first break.

They tired after their opening onslaught, but still did enough to get the choccies.

Greg McLeish kicked three goals for the winners, with Ricky Allan, Ryan Attwood, Ash Brady, Ben Mayers and Ryan Talbot all chipping in with handy six pointers.

Brady, Andy Oldmeadow and Dale Williamson were amongst the best for the Panthers, while Kane Latham, Damian Whitnell, Dale Norman and Dom Fazzino tried their hearts out for the Seagulls.

In the final game, Kilcunda-Bass proved far too strong for Warragul Industrials at Western Park, winning 19.9(123) to 4.6(3).

Blake Lawrence kicked four, Adam Banks three and Allan Bedford two for the Panthers; who had 10 other players chiming in with singles.

Josh Thompson, Peter Tucker and Colin Eden joined Lawrence on the best players list.

Neerim South had the bye.

The next round will take place across the Anzac Day weekend.
