Cleary’s clearly the winners

GARFIELD BOWLS

THE Garfield Division-2 side playing at home to Neerim District had a decisive 124-61 victory with four wins.
Tom Cleary’s team got away well to be up five shots on the second end and 10-shots-up at the break before Neerim attempted a comeback taking five out of six ends after the tea break. Neerim were still down 9-17 when both teams got three ends late however Garfield held on to win by three shots. It was a good start for Gordon Moxey playing his first game for Garfield.
Steve Whyte’s team lost the first two ends but came back strongly winning six of the next seven ends to be up 15-5 at the break. Although Neerim got three ends just after smoko, Garfield only lost two ends from the 14th and went on for a great win up 31-14.
Steve Bassed’s team won four of the first seven ends to be up 7-4. Neerim won the 10th end but were well down at the break with Garfield picking up 10 shots in six ends to be up 24-5 on the 17th. Neerim tried hard and picked up nine-shots in five ends only to lose, with Garfield going on for a great to win 29-14.
Peter Lieshout’s team won the first two end’s to be 7-0. Neerim got two shots on the third but Garfield gained 14 shots in four ends to be up 21-3 by the eighth. Neerim then picked up three singles but Garfield played very well to pick up 16 shots in five ends and were up 37-8 on the 18th. Although Neerim won four ends late Garfield went on for a strong win, to be up 43-15 at game’s end.

Garfield’s Division-4 side travelled to Neerim District and with four losses ultimately went down 69-121.
Geoff Asquith’s team won the first end but lost the next three to be down 2-5 on the fourth, however from there both teams won equal amount of ends up untill the tea break – Garfield being up 10-9. After the break Garfield had bowls in the head at times but could not hold them, with Neerim taking control of the game. Neerim only lost two ends after the break and went on to a very good win.
Don Knight’s team got away to a good start to be up 8-0 on the second but Neerim came back and picked up six shots to be down 6-8 on the fifth. Garfield then got away a little to be 16-9 at the 10th and still ahead at the break – up by three shots. Neerim played better after the break and although Garfield had shots they couldn’t hold them – when they did they were only singles with Garfield losing 20-30. However on the last end Neerim’s skip W. Cook put in a great bowl but Garfield skip Don Knight also put in a great bowl nudging it out. Neerim came in and got it back again but Don Knight put in another great bowl to move Neerim’s bowl and win the end.
Bob Lamport’ team won the first end but Neerim took over from there and won all but two ends after that till the break where they were ahead 24-4. Late in the game Garfield came back a little getting 11 shots in six ends and although they kept trying they went down 15-38.
Rose Shaw’s team had a good start to be up 8-1 on the fourth but then Neerim won three ends to get within four on the seventh. It was a good game with both teams winning ends up to the break Garfield still ahead 12-11 on the 13th. but Neerim came back and took lead at the 16th to be one shot ahead then drew away to be up 21-16 on the 21st end. Garfield pushed on winning the last four ends and only going down 20-21. This was a good start for Cliff Stephens as he was playing in his first game of pennant.
