DRIVERS in the region have been urged to take part in Safe Plate Day this Saturday following a rise in theft from motor vehicles.
Victoria Police will hold the day in Narre Warren this weekend to prevent number plate theft and other associated crimes.
Road users can come along and have their vehicles equipped with one-way screws free of charge, following a 25 per cent increase in theft from cars last year.
Leading Senior Constable Brett Owen said stolen number plates made it more difficult for police to identify criminals in the community.
“Stolen number plates are being used to evade freeway tolls and road safety cameras,” he said.
“They’re also used in other criminal activities such as petrol theft.
“These crimes are opportunistic but more importantly, they can be avoided.”
Senior Const Owen said they wanted to make it harder for thieves and Safe Plate Day is part of that.
“Safe Plate Day is about taking a stance against thieves and we’ll be fitting one-way security screws for free to anyone who wants to get involved,” he said.
“We want to see as many people as possible to help drive down crime in our community.”
Safe Plate Day will run from 9am until noon on Saturday 29 November at Westfield Fountain Gate Shopping Centre near the undercover car park opposite Supercheap Auto.
