Homeless: the numbers

AT LEAST 140 people are considered to be homeless in the Cardinia Shire. This is according to the latest Census, which also recorded a shocking 22,000 people as homeless throughout the state. Kim Culpin, manager of Outer South Homeless Services at Wayss, says ice and other drugs affect a huge number of of homeless people, and estimates that drug use has increased tenfold between the last 12 months and two years. Besides drug addiction, Ms Culpin said family violence, relationship breakdowns, mental health and a competitive housing market were also to blame for homelessness. Local services are doing what they can to help with the growing demand from people doing it tough. Wayss, Connections, Windermere and 4Cs provide help in a number of areas. Cardinia Shire Council also established My Place, which was opened in the main street of Pakenham in August 2012, which offers a range of services.
